Maca was 1st known to be cultivated by the Incas about 2000 years ago and evidence of its cultivation has been found in archaeological sites dating back to 1600 B.C. One of the main historical uses of Maca was to improve fertility (and libido) in both males and females.

Maca is a root vegetable grown in Puru and is also known as Peruvian Ginseng. It has long been used the the Peruvian people for its essential vitamins, minerals, fatty acids, amino acids and essential plants nutrients called sterols. Maca was mainly used as a fertility tonic and for menopausal symptoms. Maca extract is also thought to help with reducing hot flashes, regulating periods, increasing libido, decreasing fatigue and improving memory.

Maca Contains:

• 59% carbohydrates, 11% protein (including 19 amino acids), 8.5% dietary fibre and 2.2% fats.
• A number of unique alkalamides, alkaloids and glucosinolates1,2,3,4.
• Polysaccharides.
• Sterols, including campesterols (27.3%), ergosterol (13.6%), brassicasterol (9.1%) ergostadienol (4.5%) and sitosterol (45.5 %), the latter having phytoestrogen activity 5.
• Minerals, including Selenium, Calcium, Magnesium and Iron.
• Fatty acids including Linolenic acid (Omega 3), Palmitic acid and Oleic acid.

Dosage: The recommended dosage of Maca root powder is 1 to 3 teaspoons daily. Most commonly, one teaspoon is taken twice daily for 2 weeks and then decreased to one teaspoon daily. However if you are often sensitive to different foods, start at a low dosage and gradually increase.

Maca has been consumed at high dose by Peruvians for thousands of years with no apparent adverse effects.

Cautions:Avoid if pregnant or lactating, due to possible hormonal effects and lack of studies.
There have been reports of increased breast tenderness in women at high dosages. If this occurs, please decrease your dosage.
